The White House Horse Race

Now Mitt Romney finds himself the underdog in an ugly, grueling contest with President Obama. The track is sloppy, both horses are saddled with baggage, and the economic forecast is cloudy with a chance of storms. Political scientists tell us the conditions, not the candidates, usually dictate the outcome in these sorts of races. Still, as the finish line approaches, we can count on the media to shout out every misstep and tiny shift in momentum, like Chic Anderson calling the Belmont. We?re here to provide the visuals.

Dust to Dust: Darksiders II finds its spirit animal

Mon, Jul 30, 2012 | 12:40 BST

At four times the size of the first game, Darksiders II is big enough to make the most committed gamer break out in a bit of a sweat. Don?t be daunted; a little bird is here to help you find your way.

Darksiders II

The follow up to 2010?s Darksiders, Vigil?s debut title and a brand new IP.

Set in the same time frame as the original game; both War and Death are on a quest to prove War?s innocence in the triggering of the apocalypse which wiped out humanity.

Death is faster and more nimble than his solid brother and has access to a whole new array of tools.

One of the key new features is random loot, which provides a stronger RPG element to building your version of Death.

At a preview event last week I choked on the output of a fog machine, so THQ quietly let me sit down and play Darksiders II undisturbed for a couple of hours, perhaps as an apology for nearly letting me meet the actual grim reaper. Having seen all the cutscenes already and being a power gamer of the finest calibre (read: knows how to force-skip dialogue), I managed to get well past the opening section press had previously been allowed to come to grips with at E3, and complete not just the entire Crowfather world but the first two dungeons (of what looked like about six) of The Forge Lands.

It was only when I ran up against a boss I didn?t know how to beat ? probably the answer was in one of the dialogue bits I skipped ? that I remembered I had to go back to work at some stage. Otherwise, I think I might have been sitting there until THQ hit me over the head with a shovel and dragged me away. It?s not just that there didn?t seem to be any reason to stop; it?s that Darksiders II is huge. The map I reached at the preview event is just one of four worlds, each of which, according to Vigil, is the size of the original Darksiders. The very first activity the player performs as War?s brother Death is not to bash something up but to get on a horse and ride down a long winding path admiring the grandiose scenery and orchestral soundtrack. Not only does this immediately set the tone for what turns out to be a high-fantasy feeling very distinct from the first game?s atmosphere, it also gets you used to the idea of scale before you have to look at the overmap and have some kind of panic attack.

When I did get around to looking at the map of the first true world, The Forge Lands, it was after exploring the first town hub ? a dauntingly large area in and of itself ? and passing through a short navigational segment between me an the open plains. And I do mean open. Directly opposite me, sprawled between cliffs, was some sort of enormous tentacley eyeball thing which later research tells me was a form of Corruption, blocking my path to the Tree of Life, which connects the four realms. Apart from this obvious end goal, the pleasantly green landscape just spread out in front of me, dotted by paths snaking off in six directions.

Two minutes of pure gameplay.

Although the build I had didn?t do much to explain it, I discovered Death is accompanied by a raven named Dust. This handily green-highlighted companion is like an objective marker you can yell at; tapping the left analog stick down caused Death to bark a resentful order to the bird, which flew off in the general direction of the next goal. Out on the overmap, it was easy enough to find the path ? a gentle five-minute canter over the bodies of enemies through a good four different environments ? but in the dungeons, Dust became really valuable, highlighting the presence of levers, doors, ledges and other puzzle components.

I?m a little afraid of puzzles. I was raised on a diet of Tomb Raider, where when you walked into a cavernous room and the camera peeled off to the sound of some chanting monks you knew you were in for it and promptly called in someone better at basic logic. Vigil is far less fiendish than the old Core team in that it doesn?t require you to pull levers in the Fibbonaci sequence (or whatever), and most of the time it?s clear where you have to go and what you have to do ? even if actually achieving it is another matter. But when the dungeons are so large, and each one is a slice of a larger questline in a game of about 40 hours, you really don?t won?t to be bothered with going through the wrong door, hitting a dead end, and back-tracking. Send Dust to perch over the right corridor entrance, than hie yourself down it and solve the puzzle at the other end.

Loot, skill trees and magic.

With this simple little tool, Vigil has taken much of the pain out of what might otherwise prove to be too much game for the average pundit to handle. Completionists and trophy hounds are going to love the optional side-dungeons and ferreting out every single hidden treasure chest, but for those of us who just want to smack monsters, zip around dungeon walls like the world?s only attractive spider, and stare in horrified confusion at lever arrays for four hours before realising the door is behind them, that helpful little purple map marker and green glow make the world of difference. Darksiders II is shitting ginormous, and I?ll take any shortcut to the action I can find.

Darksiders II arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on August 14 in the US and August 21 in Europe. A Wii U version is expected to follow.

CyanogenMod 10 preview build now available for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus

CyanogenMod 10 preview build now available for Verizon's Galaxy Nexus

We know it didn't take much time for the Tenth iteration of that CM greatness to reach Google's popular Nexus 7 and Samsung's most colossal Galaxy handset on the block, but one other Android big shot was still yet to join the "preview build" bash. The marvelous news is Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners can now also take part in the early adoption process, as CyanogenMod's Brint Kriebel has said via Mountain View's social network that CM10 for Big Red's GNex is out and up for grabs. That said, he's let it be known the goods aren't exactly fully baked, though he has been rockin' it as his "daily driver" for about two weeks -- which, needless to say, is quite a good sign. Those interested in going a step further can hit up bekit's Google+ page, where you'll find the rest of the underlying details.

Colorado shooting: If not gun control, then bullet control, lawmakers say

In the wake of the Colorado shooting, two Democratic legislators urge restrictions on the purchase of large quantities of ammunition online. As with gun control, the effort faces an uphill battle.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff Writer / July 30, 2012

People look a cross at the memorial across from the movie theater, Sunday, July 29, 2012 in Aurora, Colo, where twelve people were killed and more than 50 wounded in a shooting attack on July 20.

James Holmes, the man charged with gunning down a dozen people in a Colorado movie theater, was able to buy 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet in a relatively short period of time. No questions asked.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

His relative ease at obtaining more than enough ammo to supply an Army infantry squad going into combat prompted two Democratic legislators to announce they planned legislation to make it more difficult to buy that many bullets that quickly.

But the effort by US Senator Frank Lautenberg (D) of New Jersey and US Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D) of New York faces a tough struggle in Congress, which has shown little interest in passing new gun control legislation. Despite the public?s abhorrence over the July 20 shootings, which killed 12 and also wounded 58, support for gun owner rights remains relatively high.

Holmes allegedly used a civilian version of the military?s M-16 rifle with a 100-round drum magazine, a shotgun and two .40 caliber semi-automatic handguns in the massacre.?

Called the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, the idea behind the legislation is that federally licensed gun and ammunition dealers would have to alert the police that an unlicensed individual is buying a lot of ammo. What will the police do?

As much as anything Senator Lautenberg sees them as a deterrent: a policeman calling to ask why someone is buying thousands of rounds of ammo might become suspicious if someone gives evasive answers.?

"I want them to be real nasty,? says Sen. Lautenberg, who, along with Rep. McCarthy, is known for his anti-gun efforts in Washington.?

Lautenberg and McCarthy both cited a report that Mr. Holmes had called a gun range to inquiry about shooting there. They said the owner of the range thought Holmes sounded unusual and told his staff to deny him access. The legislators said this showed why face-to-face contact was important in gun sales.?

Other parts of the proposed legislation include a requirement that anyone selling ammunition must be federally licensed. Ammo dealers would be required to maintain records. And anyone buying ammunition who is not a licensed dealer would present a photo ID at the time of purchase?something the legislators say would effectively ban online or mail order purchases of ordinance by civilians.?

After the attack, a Pew Research poll found 46 percent of Americans thought it was more important to protect American?s rights to own guns while 47 percent felt it was more important to control who owns them. Republicans favored the right of gun ownership by 70 percent while 67 percent of Democrats favored ownership control.?

Ideal benchmarks/prerequisites for relationship stages - Straight ...

What would you say either in general, or for you specifically, are the ideal benchmarks/preresequites for relationship stages? In other words, what would you say are the major transitional stages in a relationship of two people from stranger to life partner / coparents, and what do you think the prerequisites are for advancing to the next stage?

I'll give my own example, but I'm not sure it's necessarily correct or ideal, which is why I'm looking to you all, especially those with a lot of relationship experience, for your input.

I don't mind those whose relationships are a little unconventional from chiming in about their polyamorous situation or whatever, because that's very interesting and is even helpful in giving perspective, but I am hoping to get the majority of input from people who also feel like a sexually monogamous life partnership is their ideal ultimate outcome for them personally. I either case, I'm looking more for what you feel would be the ideal pathway, rather than whatever pathway you happened to actually take, though feel free to include anecdotes in service of supporting either by good or bad example why you feel a certain way.

Here's my first draft!

Stranger >Acquaintance

Merely requires meeting someone and either communicating with them or participating in the same activity, more than once.

Acquaintance > Friend

Communicate with and participate in activities with on a regular basis.

Friend > Best friends

Be honest and open about values, past, etc.

Best Friends > Casual Dating

Have mutual physical attraction, decide to start dating casually, decide methods and level of physical intimacy

Casual Dating > Boyfriend / Girlfriend (Committed Relationship)

Decide to be mutually exclusive, take STD tests before having sex, discuss the nature of sexual intimacy, confirm that you share similar goals with regard to the future of the relationship in terms of marriage, kids, career, etc.

Committed Monogamy > Live Together

Discuss financial aspects, time together and apart, etc.

Live Together > Engagement

Decide on a mutual desire for a more permanent committed relationship, reconfirm relationship and future goals, reconfirm shared values, resolve any lingering conflicts, discuss and decide on financial responsibilities, decide what to bring to and expect from the marriage, meet families, discuss method of future conflict resolution.

Engagement > Marriage

Reconfirm everything above.

Marriage > Renewal

Reaffirm commitment, resolve any unexpected new conflicts

Renewal > Parenting

Discuss parenting methods, values, beliefs, and responsibilities with regard to having children.

I've been a little vague in parts, definitely would love to hear what other people think needs to be negotiated and decided during the various stages.

Guest Post ? Cal Orey, Discover Honey's Amazing Bee-Healthy ...

cal

Guest Author, Cal Orey

Did you know?? Known as Mother Nature?s ?nectar of the gods,? honey was praised for its healing powers as far back as 5,000 years ago by Egyptians. Drawing on the 21st century honey buzz, health author Cal Orey reveals enlightening honey home remedies, straight from the book The Healing Powers of Honey: A Complete Guide to Nature?s Remarkable Nectar!

7 common health ailments in kids from A to Z and amazing at-home honey cures.

These are tried-and-true folk remedies based on scientific studies, real-life stories, medical doctors, researchers, and beekeepers. But caution, consult your health-care practitioner before putting to work any honey cure.

1. ALLERGIES (Stop seasonal misery): Dealing with annoying sneezing, a runny nose, and coughing is no picnic, thanks to seasonal pollen. But honey may come to your rescue.

What Honey Cure to Use: Try eating a tablespoon of locally produced honey. Proponents of honey tell me that your immune system will get used to the local pollen in it (it should be within a 50-mile radius from where you live).
Why You?ll Bee Happy: By taking the honey cure, you may lose your allergy symptoms. It?s worth the effort and is less pricey than a visit to the doctor or an allergist. Honey may enhance the immune system to build up a better arsenal against airborne allergens?and help you breathe easier. Honeycomb may line the entire breathing tract.

2. COUGH (Outfox irritating hacking): A cough is another unwelcome visitor and can make you feel terrible. Let?s face it, cough medicine can be pricey, doesn?t taste good, and may or may not do its job.

What Honey Cure to Use: A teaspoon of buckwheat honey is recommended before bed. Or you can make syrup of 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Repeat each remedy as needed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: A group of Penn State College of Medicine researchers discovered that honey may be the cure. The findings showed that buckwheat honey at bedtime was more powerful for curing a cough in children than a cough suppressant found in over-the-counter medications. It is believed that honey will act as a sedative to the nervous system.

3. ENERGY DRAIN (Beat low energy): Getting your cough under control is a good thing, but then what if your energy plummets? Liquid gold may be the answer again.
What Honey Cure to Use: Each morning include a teaspoon of bee pollen in your breakfast. Go ahead and take it solo. Or try The Honey Association?s Energy Drink recipe: ? pint orange juice, ? pint natural yogurt, 2 tablespoons clear honey. Place all the ingredients in a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Pour into two tall glasses. Serves two people.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey is a source of natural unrefined sugars and carbohydrates, which are easily absorbed by the body. That means, you?ll get a quick energy boost with long-lasting effects. Athletes include it in their daily diets. It was even used by runners at the Olympic Games in ancient Greece.

Thumbs-Down On Honey For Infants

From stinging honey bees to infant botulism caused by honey may sound like ideas for an anti-bee sci-fi film in the works. But in the real world, feeding honey to a human baby is really dangerous and should be avoided.

Sweet honey may contain not-so-sweet Clostridium botulinum spores. This scientific term means honey can cause infant botulism, because babies less than one year of age do not have the developed gastrointestinal tract of older humans.

Bee

Busy Bee At Work.

4. HEADACHE (Bye-bye, pain): Fatigue and headaches are not to be taken with a grain of salt, because it can hurt oh, so bad. There are different types of headaches, and some kinds may benefit from the honey bee?s gift.

What Honey Cure to Use: One cup of tea with 1 teaspoon of honey (the darker the varietal the better) is the remedy. Repeat as needed. Also, drink plenty of water and relax.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: ?The way honey might work for tension headaches,? says New York Headache Center?s Alex Mauskop, M.D., ?is by treating hypoglcemia, which can cause tension and migraines.? He adds that some antioxidants can help prevent headaches, as can magnesium and vitamin B. So turning to antioxidant-rich honey may be a sweet remedy.

5. INSOMNIA (Find sweet dreams): Getting rid of a headache is a challenge, but not getting adequate shut-eye can have long-term effects, too.

What Honey Cure to Use: Take 1 or 2 teaspoons of your favorite honey, especially before going to bed. Try sipping a cup of 2 percent low-fat milk with a dash of cinnamon. The tryptophan in milk will help to calm you.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: It?s a magic trick, according to The Honey Revolution author Ron Fessenden, M.D., providing needed glycogen to the liver so the brain doesn?t go in search of extra fuel in the earl A.M. hours when you should be in Dreamland. ?Consuming honey before bedtime also reduces the release of adrenaline, a catecholamine that raises blood pressure and heart rate,? adds the honey guru.

6. SORE THROAT (Take the sting away): Not sleeping is miserable, but a sore throat can drag you down, too, where don?t feel like walking or talking. Honey has been used as a home for centuries to help sooth one of the symptoms associated with a common cold?namely, a killer sore throat.

What Honey Cure to Use: For relief of symptoms, take a spoonful of your buckwheat honey, as often as you need, to relieve irritation. In between, sip a cup of tea with honey. Also, try pure honeycomb and honey sticks. Don?t forget all-natural honey-lemon lozenges, which also coat the throat for quick relief.
Why You?ll Bee Happy: One, honey will coat your sore throat, the symptom of the cause. Two, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties will help heal the culprit causing your pain.

7. WOUNDS (Heal cuts and scrapes): Once you get a flat stomach, what do you do if you stub your toe or cut your finger? Honey is believed by scientists, such as Dr. Peter Molan to be one of nature?s most powerful wound dressings, which really works.

Gifts From The Hive

 • Eating antioxidant-rich honey can help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes?even help reduce body fat and unwanted weight!?and increase longevity.
 • Pure, raw, unprocessed honey is a healthier sweetener than table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
 • It?s chock-full of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins?and only has 21 calories per teaspoon.
 • Super ?bee foods? (including nutrient-rich bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly) are used and touted for their healing powers by beekeepers and medical experts in the present-day.
 • The honey bee pollinates about one-third of the food we consume (including nutritious fruits and nuts which are healthy for children).

What Honey Cure to Use: Try manuka honey, available in many forms. It?s available online in lotions, creams, and bandages. Apply as directed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey can numb pain. It is osmotic and attracts water. Since bacteria are mostly made of water, they are sucked dry in the presence of honey. Bacteria are further inhibited by honey because the golden liquid produces hydrogen peroxide and is acidic (like vinegar). Honey activates the immune response by providing glucose for the white blood cells. It speeds up the healing process.

So go ahead and use the type of honey advised or your own preference; all-natural, raw honey, dark varietals are recommended for best results. (Warning: To avoid infant botulism, do not fee honey to a baby who is younger than one year.)

WHAT WILL I WEAR?

If something doesn't happen fast, Spain's Pau Gasol will be looking a little casual when he carries his national flag at Friday's opening ceremony.

He still hasn't received his official team clothing. Perhaps it's a height issue? The Los Angeles Lakers star isn't the easiest person to dress given that he's 2.15 meters (7 foot) tall.

"Everything's up in the air," says Gasol.

OLYMPIC RETURN

Carly Patterson is back at an Olympics for the first time since winning the gymnastics all-around title in Athens, and she's enjoying the trip down memory lane.

"Honestly, in my everyday life at home, I'm no one special. Just Carly, going about my everyday life, cleaning my house," says Patterson, who doesn't even have her gold medal in her own house. "So it feels really nice to actually be reminded of what I've done because I don't think about it a lot. And I am proud of it."

Patterson, the first U.S. woman since Mary Lou Retton to win the all-around title, is in London with P&G. She showed off another of her talents Friday, singing the national anthem at the opening ceremony for P&G's U.S. Family Home.

TEST OF FIRE

U. S. rider Boyd Martin passed his first Olympic hurdle Friday as his horse Otis Barbotiere was accepted in the veterinary inspection that signaled the start of the equestrian eventing competition at Greenwich Park.

He faced a much more perilous trial in the spring of 2011 when his training barn west of Philadelphia caught fire in the middle of the night. Martin ran into the flaming barn and saved several horses, including Otis Barbotiere ? but seven other horses perished.

SPECULATION EVERYWHERE

There's only one thing that people here in the Olympic Park talk about when they have the chance on Friday ? and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Yes, even the most seasoned of hacks are taking part in the guessing game about the Olympic ceremony. Who will light the flame, and just how British can it really get?

Will Mary Poppins really be there? What about Harry Potter? And how will James Bond make his appearance? Is it possible to work a Briton's favourite (yes, FAVOURITE) canned food ? baked beans ? into an opening ceremony?

In just a couple of hours we'll all know. Luckily there is a bit of sport coming up for everyone to talk about next.

AFTER THE RIOTS, A REWARD

He was the online organizer who urged Londoners to grab their brooms and take to the streets after the August 2011 riots that saw stores looted and cars torched in the capital's worst unrest in decades.

Now activist Dan Thompson is among 17 people who were handed free tickets for Friday's Olympic opening ceremony by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Thompson used social networks to mobilize volunteers to sweep up debris in communities across London after nights of violent disorder.

Cameron has also offered tickets to youth workers and graduates of Britain's National Citizen Service, a program which sees young people carry out community work.

___

TOUGH LUCK

Dozens of people have been turned away from the archery event in central London ? victims, it seems, of hoax tickets.

Others arrived at Lord's Cricket Ground because of a misunderstanding. They thought the event ? billed as "unticketed" ? meant you could just turn up on the day.

Many vented their anger at volunteers but were told that their tickets ? presumably purchased from unofficial sites ? weren't valid because Friday's preliminary rounds weren't even open to the public.

Meanwhile, inside, South Korea's team scored a world record with 2,087 points to take first place.

UNEXPECTED HISTORY

It has become a symbol of the Olympics: a runner carrying a flaming torch on the final leg of a journey that began in Greece, then dramatically lighting a cauldron to symbolize the beginning of the most heralded event of international sports.

The torch relay has been dressed up in the pageantry of ancient Greek mythology. But the event has a darker origin.

Historians believe the ancient Greeks used a fire ritual in their games ? but no torch relay. That idea is actually the legacy of the Nazis, who conceived the event for the 1936 Berlin Olympics to glorify Adolf Hitler's regime.

Credit for the idea goes to Carl Diem, chief organizer of the 1936 Games. Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels seized on the idea to link the Nazis to the glory of ancient Greece. All the resources of the Nazi state were organized to make it happen.

Runners were chosen so their physical appearance matched the Nazi idea of the "Aryan Master Race." Radio broadcasts along the route from Greece to Berlin fueled public enthusiasm.

At the next Summer Games in 1948, British organizers chose to continue the relay despite its Nazi origins, advertising the event as a "relay of peace." The first runner symbolically removed his army uniform before grabbing the torch.

PIT STOP

The USA men's basketball team was delayed a few minutes before taking the stage for a news conference this afternoon, but for good reason.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski and Lebron James were slightly lost in the halls of the Olympics Main Press Center as they were supposed to be appearing before hundreds of journalists.

"Where's the bathroom?" Krzyzewski asked.

Once resolved, he and James joined the rest of the coaches and players who are part of one of the biggest star-wattage attractions at the games.

BIG STAR, BIG FAN

Two-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings is one of the biggest stars in beach volleyball, and her success in the sand hasn't done much to take the fan out of her.

When it comes to other big names at the games, Walsh Jennings reacts just like anyone else who meets a sporting hero face to face.

She has run into swimmer Michael Phelps and NBA players Tony Parker and Ronny Turiaf since arriving in London on Monday.

"I still feel like a giddy little girl," Walsh Jennings says. "The first couple of days are kind of like the first days of high school."

___

FRIENDLY CONFINES

Any big-time baseball fan will be awash in familiarity when visiting Lord's Cricket Ground.

Lord's is home to the archery competition, and the event kicked off on Friday morning.

Lord's is an historic place, the cricket equivalent to Wrigley Field ? and the similarities are striking. Nestled in a neighborhood of London that has apartments just across the street (rooftop pint, anyone?), Lord's features brick archways, perfectly manicured lawns and an intimate atmosphere with seats right on top of the action.

FLOATING FLOORS

Horses and riders are floating on air ? but not just because they're excited about the start of equestrian events Saturday.

The main equestrian arena, spectator walkways, exercise track and stables have all been built on platforms to protect the hallowed grass grounds of Greenwich Park, London's oldest royal park.

"It's amazing the lengths they've gone to to protect the grounds," says Linda Zang, dressage coach for the U.S. eventing team, whose five horses easily passed a pre-competition fitness test Friday.

Of the three elements that go into eventing ? dressage, jumping and cross country ? only the cross country will be run on solid ground.

WHICH FLAG, NOW

Diplomatic dispute? That means customers to be had.

One cheeky optician known for its humor is running a full page ad in a British newspaper that cashes in on the recent Korean flag mix-up at the women's soccer game between North Korea and Colombia.

The ad appears Friday in the pull-out Olympics section of Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper. It features both the North Korean and South Korean flags side-by-side. Underneath is Korean writing which, when translated, roughly matches the optician's famous advertising catch phrase: "Should have gone to Specsavers."

The South Korean flag was mistakenly displayed on the giant screen before the match in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday night. The North Korean team refused to take the field for about an hour before the game started. London organizers have since apologized for the mix-up.

North Korea's IOC member, Chang Ung, has now proposed that Olympic protocol officials meet with team leaders before every medal ceremony to check that the correct flags and national anthems are used.

NOT SO HOT DOG

Tennis players call it the "hot dog" ? the flashy, between-the-legs, back-to-the-opponent shot when chasing down a lob into the backcourt.

On Friday, No 8 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark tried the difficult maneuver twice during a practice session with No. 10 seed Li Na of China, ahead of the Olympic event at Wimbledon. Both times, she failed to swing her racket under the ball, and it trickled into the grass on her side of the net.

"I want to do it so much but I can't," Wozniacki said with a laugh to Li. Then the Chinese player tried it when Wozniacki lobbed her, and she too failed.

Players usually stick to the conventional in training, and try the "hot dog" for fun. Once in a while, though, the crowd-pleasing shot comes in handy in a match.

In 2009, Roger Federer set up a matchpoint with a "hot dog" in a three-set win over Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at the U.S. Open.

WHAT'S THE FORECAST?

Those in London for the Games will be getting a more authentic British weather experience today as rainy spells hit the capital.

Thursday was the hottest day of the year in Britain ? temperatures reached 31.4 Celsius 89 Fahrenheit) at the Olympic Park ? but Friday started off much cooler indeed.

The good news? Forecasters say that any rain should have cleared by early evening with the British Met Office predicting just a 10 percent chance of a downpour at the opening ceremony. The event begins at 8.12 p.m. (3:12 p.m. EDT) so if things play out as expected the 60,000 spectators in the Olympic Stadium should stay dry.

Whatever happens with the weather, you can bet the Brits will be talking about it.

Aging AIDS epidemic raises new health questions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? AIDS is graying. By the end of the decade, the government estimates, more than half of Americans living with HIV will be over 50. Even in developing countries, more people with the AIDS virus are surviving to middle age and beyond.

That's good news ? but it's also a challenge. There's growing evidence that people who have spent decades battling the virus may be aging prematurely. At the International AIDS Conference this week, numerous studies are examining how heart disease, thinning bones and a list of other health problems typically seen in the senior years seem to hit many people with HIV when they're only in their 50s.

"I'm 54, but I feel older," said Carolyn Massey of Laurel, Md., who has lived with HIV for nearly 20 years.

"When I hear young people talk about, 'Well you get HIV and you take your drugs and you'll be all right' ? that's just not the truth," she said. "This is a lifelong thing we're talking about, and it unfolds every day on you."

The graying isn't just because people like Massey are surviving longer. Some of it comes from older adults being newly diagnosed, a trend U.S. health officials say is small but slowly growing. Yes, grandparents still have sex ? and that's an age group missed by all those hip safe-sex messages aimed at teens and 20-somethings.

"They let down their guard," is how Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it.

Already, a third of the nearly 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S. are over 50, and by 2020 half will be, Fenton said at one of numerous sessions on aging at the world's largest AIDS meeting.

People 50 or older accounted for 17 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2009, according to the CDC's latest data. That's up from 13 percent in 2001.

There aren't as good counts in poor regions of the world, where access to life-saving medications came years later than in developed countries.

But even in hard-hit sub-Saharan Africa, home to most of world's HIV-infected population, studies suggest 3 million people living with HIV are 50-plus, said Dr. Joel Negin of the University of Sydney in Australia. By 2040, he said, that could reach 9 million.

There, challenges are different. Ruth Waryaro of Kenya, addressing the conference on her 65th birthday, said clinic workers hassle her when she goes to pick up her monthly supply of medication ? not believing a grandmother really needs it.

"If you're not strong enough, you just leave the medication and go home," said Waryaro, who raised four children of her own and now is raising four AIDS orphans. She also has diabetes and high blood pressure.

As Negin pointedly told the conference, "50 is not old." But for years, world health authorities didn't even measure HIV in people beyond age 49.

Today, people who are diagnosed and treated early can expect a near-normal life-span, Dr. Anthony Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health, told The Associated Press.

The new focus is on what these pioneering survivors can expect as they reach their 50s, 60s and beyond. They're now getting chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and osteoporosis ? some of the common ailments when anyone gets old. But studies suggest people with HIV may be at higher risk for some of those illnesses, or get them earlier than usual.

"It's almost created a new subspecialty of medicine," Fauci said.

Perhaps the strongest evidence links HIV and an increased risk of heart disease. Some AIDS medications raise that risk. But in research published for the AIDS meeting, scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital uncovered another reason.

They scanned the arteries of people with and without HIV, and found the HIV patients had more inflammation inside their arteries, putting them at risk for the kind of clots that trigger heart attacks. That's even though the HIV patients had their virus well-controlled and weren't that old ? their average age was 52, the researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

HIV triggers body-wide inflammation as a person's immune system tries to fight the virus, a process that persists and can quietly damage organs even with good medications, CDC's Fenton said.

HIV is not acting in a vacuum, said Dr. Amy Justice of Yale University, noting that people's histories of smoking, for example, also contribute to inflammation.

But she pointed to data from a Veterans Affairs study that said older people with HIV use more medications for other diseases than HIV-free patients the same age.

At the conference, some older people with HIV lined up to have their photographs made and their personal histories recorded, part of a Web project called "The Graying of AIDS."

It's a chance to be counted, and share knowledge.

"We're so concerned about the youth factor, we forget about the people who've brought us thus far," said Massey, the Maryland woman, who leads an HIV group called Older Women Embracing Life and works with churches to raise HIV awareness.

CDC's Fenton noted that those voices can help other older adults realize they're at risk, when they're getting back onto the dating scene after years of monogamous relationships. Older people don't use condoms as much as younger people.

"We still have this huge issue with stigma so thick you can cut it with a knife," says Massey, who also wants HIV testing to become a routine part of health check-ups. "We have to normalize the conversation."

The latest installment of Aging America, the joint AP-APME project examining the aging of the baby boomers and the impact that will have on society.

The good news is, teaching aids help improve abilities in this particular type of sport. Golf lessons online have a lot of benefits for beginners and even for those who have been actively playing for quite some time.

Benefits of Instructional Golf Videos

Studies show two major categories of favored learning styles are visual and auditory. In easier words, most of the people choose to make use of their eyes and ears in order to learn new information. This normally depends upon how the brain functions. People who utilize both of them are generally known as ?balanced? listeners. Sixty-five percent of the populations are believed to be visual learners, while the rest are auditory or balanced learners.

This explains the reason why numerous individuals gain knowledge from visual experiences. Through the help of instructional videos, handling new info is considerably quicker. It also allows you to retain the information considerably longer. Videos also provide 2 to 3 times more amount of learning compared with other methods.

A golf video may also be the best option when you wish to bring down cost. Get low-priced instructional videos instead of a specialist trainer with a high hourly rate. You could pause and fast-forward the videos according to your level of skill and comprehension of the lessons. Videos also allow you to get back to a certain lesson. These characteristics are very beneficial when you want to learn complicated techniques along with difficult shots.

With the aid of technology, learning by means of videos is more effective. Many online golf lessons feature split screens, close-ups, slow motions, as well as graphics to tell you the best way to implement a skill. By doing this, you can efficiently find out how to grip, aim, and swing the club. In addition, you can see the small details you might have been missing like rhythm, timing, and balance. Visual learning is sometimes more interesting than reading through guides or listening to an expert.

You have to know how to choose the best videos. Your need has to be the very first concern here. Think of your weak points and also the strategies you want to learn. When you are a new comer to the sport, get a general video for beginners. After knowing your requirements, start doing a search online. It can let you see several choices. Whether you want free online lessons or those that are in DVD, you?ll find a long list of options.

Start seeking your resources. It is never too late to learn more about golf swing or some other aspect of the sport. Golf is a fun sport and studying this through videos makes it even more fun.

Kenyan separatist group ban overturned, appeal planned

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - Kenya's High Court lifted a ban on Wednesday on a separatist group whose campaign for the secession of the country's coastal strip and famed tourist haven has unnerved investors and raised fears of violence.

The Kenyan government outlawed the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) in 2010 along with 33 entities it described as "organised criminal groups". But the Mombasa-based court ruled that the ban was unconstitutional.

The ruling could pave the way for talks between the MRC and the government, which has ruled out negotiating with an outlawed group. However, the government said it would appeal the decision and showed no immediate sign of softening its stance toward the movement.

Hundreds of MRC supporters marched in the streets on Mombasa city, Kenya's second largest, waving twigs and shouting 'Pwani si Kenya' or 'The Coast is not Kenya' after the group won its case to reverse the ban on its activities.

In its ruling, the three-judge court said there was no evidence that the group had engaged in any criminal activity. It said the MRC, like any other Kenyans, has rights under the law including that to promote a political agenda that called for secession.

Justice Francis Tuiyot, however, stressed that any call for secession must be expressed in a fair and democratic manner - and in no way incite war, violence or hate speech.

He said the MRC should be registered as a political party, and that the court's decision should not be seen as an endorsement of secession.

"The court has been able to deduce that MRC is a political movement. Secession is a political agenda. The court therefore grants MRC a chance to enjoy their political right. They should organise and register as a political party," Tuiyot said.

In a statement, Attorney-General Githu Muigai said he would appeal the court's decision.

"Any group or organization challenging the constitutional authority and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kenya cannot enjoy protection by the constitution," he said.

The statement did not say when the appeal would be filed.

President Mwai Kibaki has flatly rejected the MRC demand for secession, refusing any negotiations on this point. Other grievances raised by the group include the lack of jobs and land for the indigenous people of the coast.

The MRC chairman has said the group would boycott and disrupt voting on the coast in national elections scheduled for March 2013 if its demand for secession is not met by authorities in the capital, Nairobi.

Analysts fear this could turn the tourist hotspot - with its sandy beaches and pristine waters a jewel in the East African nation's economy - into a potential flashpoint, fuelling wider fears of ethnic violence and riots during the elections.

"The ruling will ease the tension. Both sides now need to talk," said Mzalendo Kibunjia, who heads a national agency formed to reconcile tribes after post-election violence in 2007 killed more than 1,200 people.

'RAMADAN GIFT'

The MRC spokesman, Mohamed Mraja, welcomed the ruling.

"This is a wonderful Ramadan gift for all of us," Mraja, clad in a Muslim cap and flowing white robe, told reporters. The holy fasting month of Ramadan is currently under way.

Mraja said he would circulate copies of the ruling to all police stations and courts around the coast, where he said more than 200 of the group's members were being held on charges of belonging to an illegal group, so that they can be released.

About 100 police officers in helmets and armed with clubs and tear gas canisters kept a close watch on the chanting demonstrators, shepherding them through traffic in the busy streets. Many demonstrators had walked from far-flung corners of the coast region to hear the ruling.

"I am so excited. People back home are already celebrating," said Nuru Kadzo, a 32-year-old housewife who said she had travelled from the town of Hola 400 km (250 miles) away. "Today I will break my fast with a lot of joy."

MRC says it has documents of what it says is a 1963 accord signed by then-Prime Minister Jomo Kenyatta, later president, and Zanzibar counterpart Mohamed Shante granting Kenya a 50-year lease over the coast. This would expire in June 2013, when the land should return to its indigenous people, the MRC argues.

But the Kenyan government and historians in Nairobi have dismissed the treaty as a forgery and MRC propaganda.

Oddball Pulsating Star Hiccups as It Spins

Astronomers have discovered a weird compact spinning star whose rotation has sped up slightly, causing it to be hidden until now.

The star is what's called a pulsar, made of the condensed remnants of a normal star that have been squeezed down to a much smaller volume. This compression has caused the star's rotation to accelerate to roughly seven times a second.

Pulsars are so called because they appear to pulse on and off, as beams of light pointing from their poles sweep toward Earth and away.

The newly discovered pulsar, designated J1838-0537, is a rare type that emits light only in the high-energy gamma-ray range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The researchers discovered it by analyzing data collected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

"The pulsar is, at 5,000 years of age, very young," Holger Pletsch, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) in Germany, said in a statement. "It rotates about its own axis roughly seven times per second and its position in the sky is towards the Scutum constellation." [Video: How Gamma-Ray Pulsars Are Detected]

Pletsch is lead author of a paper describing the find, which will be published in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

"After the discovery we were very surprised that the pulsar was initially only visible until September 2009," Pletsch said. "Then it seemed to suddenly disappear."

Careful analysis showed that the pulsar did not actually vanish, but in fact sped up its rotation by about 38 millionths of a Hertz (a unit of frequency denoting the number of cycles per second). "This difference may appear negligibly small, but it's the largest glitch ever measured for a pure gamma-ray pulsar," said Bruce Allen, director of the Albert Einstein Institute.

That meant that the next beam wasn't there when the scientists were expecting it, so it wasn't noticed in the deluge of data collected by the Fermi telescope.

In other words, the pulsar stopped pulsing.

"If the sudden frequency change is neglected, then after only eight hours, a complete rotation of the pulsar is lost in our counting, and we can no longer determine at which rotational phase the gamma-ray photons reach the detector aboard Fermi," Pletsch explained.

Once the change was taken into account, though, the researchers located the pulsar.

Such glitches have been observed in other pulsars before, but their cause is unknown. One idea is that "star quakes" on the surfaces of pulsars affect the change in rotation speed, or that the glitch is caused by interactions between the stars' fluid interiors and crusts.

This oddball pulsar was only discovered by harnessing the analysis power of new algorithms on the superfast ATLAS computer cluster. The researchers hope that the system will uncover more "hiccupping" pulsars to help elucidate how they work.

Tropical Parks Fail to Protect Animals and Plants [Slide Show]

ENDANGERED PREDATOR: Even forest reserves have not been enough to prevent the decline of the tiger in countries like India. Image: ? Ashish Gautamm / Flickr

India's Supreme Court has temporarily banned tourism in tiger reserves. The problem? All those hotels and shops built within the protected areas for the tourists are cutting down on actual forest habitat for the endangered big cats. In addition, local governments have failed to create buffer zones of slightly less degraded forest around the parks to enable the rare tigers to thrive.

The tall trees of such a protected swath of tropical forest often rise like a wall from a denuded hillside or plain. Such stands of relatively untouched trees are meant as shelters for the rich array of plant and animal species, such as the tiger, that once spread throughout vast regions of tropical jungle. But a new scientific survey that largely agrees with the Indian court's ruling finds that the more than 16,000 independent parks and reserves around the world protected by humans from humans may not prove a long-term refuge. Interviews with scientists and other experts to assess the relative health of some 60 protected areas of tropical forest in 36 different nations reveal that roughly half are continuing to lose unique species of plants and animals.

View a slide show of some of the threats to reserves and unique species.

The problem appears to be the degradation of surrounding forestland that remains unprotected, according to the research of some 261 ecologists, biologists and other scientists published online in Nature on June 25 (Scientific American is a part of Nature Publishing Group).

The scientists surveyed their colleagues to assess the relative health of more than 30 different groups of species from apex predators, like the tiger, to vines and plants that grow on top of other plants in African, American and Asian reserves. The reserves themselves ranged in size from as little as 160 hectares to 3.6 million hectares?but size was no predictor of health.

Instead, the most important thing that determined the health of these areas was the state of the lands surrounding them. Eighty-five percent of the reserves saw the surrounding lands cleared of trees or suffering from other significant impacts. In addition, many reserves themselves saw their own jungle canopies thin out: Trees were cut down for removal and sale or to make room for hotels or even increased hunting.

As a result, the number of exotic plants and animals as well as freshwater fish declined in most reserves. But some species benefited, including trees that specialize in filling disturbed ecosystems as well as human diseases that emerge from interactions with wild animals?so-called zoonoses such as Ebola. "The fates of tropical protected areas will be determined by environmental changes both within and around the reserves," the researchers wrote in Nature, noting that, essentially, protected areas needed to be better protected. "It is not enough to confine such efforts to reserve interiors while ignoring their surrounding landscapes."
