Google retires more services, consolidates others in continued efficiency bid

When you run as many services as Google does, every once in a while you're going to have to do some pruning. Evidently Mountain View's got the secateurs out, having just announced the next batch of its projects that will be getting axed wound down. For the chop are: AdSense for Feeds, Classic Plus, Spreadsheet Gadgets, Places for Android, and +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools. Other services are being merged into existing properties to prevent overlap, such as Google Storage for Picasa and Drive -- which are now consolidated -- and Insights for Search is now part of Google Trends. Naturally, the search giant claims this is all about streamlining, and improving other core products. If the retired service involves a paid subscription, or legacy data, then you'll need to check the specifics on the official blog to find out how this will affect you, which fortunately for you, is just a tap of the source link away.

"Well, we?are?political beings. We live in the world; we live in the world of politics. The inner life isn't separate from that. What is the goal of the creativity one feels ? and wishes to develop and help others to develop? Is it just to make more and more pots or take more and more pictures? Is that what it's all about? I don't think so. I think that as we become more creative, we move toward a concern with social justice and compassion. That's the natural movement. We come, maybe through times of loneliness, toward experiencing the reality of another person. As we create, you might say, we are created. We move toward a deepened awareness of reality. Outwardly, we move toward social justice; inwardly we move toward compassion.

"Consider words: more and more I have come to understand that words are non-verbal. Try asking yourself where the words are before you speak them. I think we make a mistake in trying to restrict a word into something that we can read about in a dictionary. A word is a being. Writing becomes a more intimate and inspired activity when you see you're writing out of your substance, out of the mystery."

Bluegrass Awards remember Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? It was a hard year in the bluegrass world and the loss of icons such as Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson hung over the International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday night.

The Gibson Brothers won entertainer of the year and joined Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice as the only multiple winners at the ceremony at Ryman Auditorium. But the attention of most was turned toward the pioneers no longer able to attend.

An emotional Steve Martin paid tribute to the late banjo innovator Scruggs with a special 30-banjo salute that included many of the world's top five-string players.

The IBMAs also saluted Watson and players Doug Dillard and Everett Lilly, as well as bluegrass promoter and actor Andy Griffith, all of whom died in the last year. Watson won guitarist of the year posthumously.

It was the first entertainer win for The Gibson Brothers, who also took home honors for gospel recorded performance for "Singing As We Rise," with Ricky Skaggs. Sisk & Ramblers Choice won album of the year for "The Heart of a Song" and song of the year for "A Far Cry From Lester & Earl," keeping with the night's unofficial theme.

In major categories, top nominee Russell Moore won male vocalist of the year, Dale Ann Bradley won female vocalist, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers were named emerging artist, Blue Highway won vocal group, The Boxcars won instrumental group, Lonesome River Band won instrumental recorded performance for "Angeline The Baker" and St. Jude charity album "Life Goes On" won recorded event.

Rob Ickes (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Sammy Shelor (banjo), Adam Steffey (mandolin) and Marshall Wilborn (bass) won instrumentalist of the year awards.

And 2012 Bluegrass Hall of Fame inductees Doyle Lawson and Ralph Rinzler were honored as well.

Though the night was full of spirited performances, none could hold up to Martin's show-ending salute to Scruggs. The actor, comedian and musician seemed on the verge of tears as he paid tribute to Scruggs before inviting players including J.D. Crowe, Kristin Scott Benson, Sam Bush, show co-host Del McCoury, Lawson, Shelor and Tony Trischka and more than 20 others onto the stage where Scruggs first played his rolling, rollicking style during the Grand Ole Opry.

Scruggs' sons Gary and Randy also were part of the tribute.

Martin said in an interview before the show that he was inspired by the Kennedy Center Honors when conceiving of the Scruggs tribute.

"They like to do these big salutes and I thought why not here at the IBMAs for Earl," Martin said. "All the banjo players who've been influenced by him, why can't they all be here and pay tribute to him?"

McCoury, inducted into the Hall of Fame last year, said he would probably not have gotten into music had it not been for the Flatt & Scruggs record his brother bought in 1950. The 11-year-old McCoury was transfixed by Scruggs' playing.

"I just could not get that sound out of my head," McCoury said.

Mandolin player Bush joked he was playing rhythm banjo while on stage, but said he felt privileged to be involved.

"I knew Mr. Earl," Bush said. "It gets real emotional as I look at Randy and Gary standing there and how they must feel, and how everybody loved their dad. He was a true gentleman. Nobody's more deserving of accolades than him."

Butterflies' astounding tale revealed in 3-D movie

A new movie is bringing to theaters the tale of the discovery of monarch butterflies' astonishing migration ? a journey that remained shrouded in mystery up until the 1970s.

Based on a true story, the 3-D film "Flight of the Butterflies," which will be shown at IMAX theaters, chronicles the groundbreaking work of scientist Fred Urquhart, a man who spent many years trying to figure out where the iconic butterflies went during the cold winter months. They simply seemed to disappear.

Yet Urquhart's investigations ? and his invention of the first butterfly-tracking tags ? eventually uncovered a tale so strange it seemed more like fiction than fact.

    1. Vatican brands 'Jesus' Wife' papyrus?as a fake

It turns out that the dainty insects fly thousands of miles, from Mexico to the northern United States and Canada, and then back again, all over the course of about four generations.

Their story begins in a single swath of pine forest in central Mexico, where the butterflies spend the winter months clinging to the trees by the millions, barely moving, stuck in a sleepy torpor.

Come springtime, the monarchs begin to stir. They mate, and then begin to fly north. Over the course of several generations they travel through Texas, the Midwest, New England and still farther, until they alight on milkweed plants growing in the farthest reaches of their northward journey. This final generation of north-flying butterflies lays eggs, and then dies.

Then, the generation of butterflies born at these highest latitudes turns southward, and flies hundreds and hundreds of miles ? retracing the paths of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents ? all the way back to that patch of Mexican fir forest.

It is still unknown how this long-lived "super-generation" of monarchs knows to make the long journey home to a land they've never seen.

Thanks to the immersive 3-D Giant Screen environment, audiences can see intimate details of this astonishing journey. The film offers an up-close look at the metamorphosis from egg to pupa to caterpillar to butterfly, along with stunning footage captured in the butterfly forests of Mexico. [ Video: See the movie trailer ]

Although the film is an uplifting one, the story of the monarchs' struggle is tinctured with tragedy.

Monarch populations have faced significant declines over the last two decades, hit hard by a steep reduction in milkweed across North America. Milkweed is the only plant upon which the butterflies lay their eggs. Due to herbicide use and farming practices in the United States, milkweed has disappeared from some 140 million acres in the last 10 years.

Box-office money from the film will help fund butterfly conservation efforts, according to a statement from the production company.

The 3-D, big-screen film "Flight of the Butterflies" opens in select theaters in the United States and Canada on Oct. 1, and will continue to roll out at additional theaters into 2013.

White v. Elias?(Ohio)
(An individual who was kicked by an escaped horse brought an action against the horse owner and the property owner; the court ruled that there was no strict liability but that an issue of material fact as to the potential negligence of the defendants.)

A horse boarding facility released horses to graze in a pasture unsupervised. ?However, because there was no food trough and because the pasture was bare, six-horse then escaped from the pasture and ended up on a neighboring property. ?The neighbor saw the horses and called the plaintiff because she was familiar with the horses. ?They asked if she could help lead the horses home. ?However, when the?plaintiff?approached the group of horses, one of them kicked back and hit her in the face, causing serious and permanent injuries.

The plaintiff sued the horse owner and the owner of the property where the horse was boarded, alleging claims for strict liability and negligence. ?The defendants moved for summary judgment, which the trial court granted. ?The plaintiff appealed.

On appeal, the plaintiff first argued that the defendants were strictly liable for plaintiff?s injuries because the horses escaped their control and property and trespassed. ?However, the Court explained that the law providing for recovery for personal injuries from the trespass by animals did not extend to injuries suffered on a third party?s private property. ?The plaintiff did not own or occupy the property where the incident occurred. ?Rather she was invited onto the property of a third party neighbor who did not own or control the horse.

Plaintiff next argued that a triable issue of fact existed as to the defendants negligence. ?the evidence indicated that the subject horse ?had acted aggressively in the past, and had previously bit and kicked other horses.? ?The evidence also showed that there was a previous recommendation to install an electric fence because the split wooden fence ?might not adequately contain the horses.? ?There was also prior knowledge ?that horses had escaped from the pasture before, the fence was missing rails and sections, and deer often knocked over the top rails of the fence.? ?Despite all that, and despite the apparent existence of ?a rule that the horse?s owner must supervise her horse in the pasture at all times,? the individual who agreed to board the horse left the subject horse unsupervised in the pasture. ?As a result, the Court found that a material issue of fact existed as to the negligence claim against the boarding company.

The Court also found a triable issue of fact regarding the negligence claim against the property owner. ?According to the Court, ?questions of fact remain[ed] about whether the fence was in a state of disrepair . . . .? ?The overall adequacy of the fencing was also in question.

Finally, the plaintiff argued that it was error for the trial court to have determined that assumption of the risk barred her from recovery. ?After detailing the law of assumption of the risk in Ohio, the Court concluded that the doctrine did not apply to completely bar recovery. ?The Court based this conclusion on Ohio statutes that permit a person to take and confine animals that are at large.

NOTE: The?interpretation?and application of the statutes relating to finding animals at large was interesting. ?It?seemed?a bit of a stretch to find that if someone elects to undertake to take and control an animal at large (something permitted by, but not required by, statute), then assumption of the risk is not a bar to recovery.

China reacts with surveillance ships to Japan's purchase of disputed islands

Chinese surveillance ships briefly entered waters near disputed islands in the East China Sea that fuel nationalist passions on both sides. Will Beijing ultimately accept Japan's reasoning for the move?

The civilian vessels were engaged in ?the normal performance of their duty,? Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters. The ships withdrew soon after being ordered to leave the area by Japanese coast guards, Japan?s Kyodo news agency reported.

The sovereignty dispute has flared up again since Tuesday, when the Japanese government purchased three of the five contested islands from the Japanese family that had owned them. The uninhabited islands are known as the Diaoyu in China and as the Senkaku in Japan.

Beijing clearly had to react, if only because popular sentiment is running high on the issue in China; protestors have staged demonstrations in a number of cities, Japanese citizens have been assaulted on the streets of Shanghai, tempers are flaring in Internet posts and nationalism is rampant.

Aside from that, the islands could also be valuable; ownership of them gives rights over rich fishing grounds and a claim to potentially huge oil reserves under the nearby seabed.

Senior Chinese officials have limited themselves, however, to strong words and saber rattling. Today?s edition of the ?People?s Daily,? the ruling Communist party?s official organ, carried a full page article detailing China?s recent military modernization program, for example.

On Thursday, in a thinly veiled hint at retaliatory economic steps, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Zengwei told a news briefing that "with Japan's so-called purchase of the islands, it will be hard to avoid negative consequences for Sino-Japanese economic and trade ties."

Behind the bluster, though, it might well be that Beijing has decided privately to accept the Japanese government?s explanation that it bought the islands to prevent further trouble.

Shintaro Ishihara, the stridently nationalist governor of Tokyo, had announced his own plan for the Tokyo municipality to buy the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands. Had he done so he could have caused untold mischief, provoking the Chinese at will by starting to build, or even to settle people.

Still, the sight of a Japanese citizen selling the islands to the Japanese government, regardless of China?s insistence that they are not anybody else?s to sell, has been painful here.

The authorities have salved their national pride with gestures. Last Tuesday, China began issuing weather forecasts for the islands and their surrounding waters, after publishing baseline coordinates setting out the Chinese view of which bits of rock and water belong to Beijing.

Eventually, tensions will doubtless fade, China and Japan will quietly acknowledge that they can never resolve the issue of sovereignty, and both sides will end up doing some sort of resource-sharing deal, just as they have elsewhere in the East China Sea. But that might take a while.?

Indonesian ferry collides with cargo ship; 8 dead

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? A passenger ferry collided with a cargo ship and sank west of Indonesia's main island Wednesday morning, and at least eight people were killed, officials said.

More than 200 crew and passengers were evacuated after the accident, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan, who initially said the second vessel was an oil tanker. It wasn't immediately clear if all of them were OK, and a search for others is in progress where the accident occurred in the Sunda straits, west of Java island.

"So far it's still unclear how many passengers were on board the ferry," Ervan said, adding it had about 30 crew members. "We are still waiting for the manifest."

Manifests are often unreliable in Indonesia because tickets are sold onboard to passengers who are never registered.

A helicopter and at least 10 ships were searching for survivors, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency.

The Bahuga Jaya ferry links Java and southern Sumatra island. It went down after colliding with the South African-flagged Norr Gastar about six kilometers (four miles) off Bakahuni port in Sumatra.

There was no immediate word on whether the cargo ship was damaged.

Ferries are a major source of transportation in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 240 million. Sea accidents are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.

Molecular process in fat cells that influences stress and longevity identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? As part of their ongoing research investigating the biology of aging, the greatest risk factor for type 2 diabetes and other serious diseases, scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center have identified a new factor -- microRNA processing in fat tissue -- which plays a major role in aging and stress resistance. This finding may lead to the development of treatments that increase stress resistance and longevity and improve metabolism.

The findings appear in the Sept. 5 online edition of Cell Metabolism.

Over the past several years, it has become clear that fat cells (adipocytes) are more than just repositories to store fat. Indeed, fat cells secrete a number of substances that actively influence metabolism and systemic inflammation. Previous studies have found that reducing fat mass by caloric restriction (CR) or surgical or genetic means can promote longevity and stress resistance in species from yeast to primates. However, little is known about how CR and fat reduction produce these beneficial effects. This study investigated one type of molecular mediator -- change in microRNAs (miRNAs) and the processing enzymes required to make them- that is influenced by aging and reversed by caloric restriction. miRNAs are involved in the formation of mature RNA.

Based on studies conducted using human cells, mice and C. elegans (a microscopic worm used as a model organism for aging studies), the researchers demonstrated that levels of multiple miRNAs, decrease in fat tissue (adipose) with age in all three species. This is due to a decrease in the critical enzyme required from converted pre-miRNAs to mature miRNAs, Dicer. In the human study, which compared the miRNA levels in preadipocytes (fat cell precusors) of young, middle-aged and older people, people aged 70 and older had the lowest miRNA levels. "The fact that this change occurs in humans, mice and worms points to its significance as a general and important process," says lead author C. Ronald Kahn, MD, Chief Academic Officer at Joslin Diabetes Center and the Mary K. Iacocca Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Caloric restriction, which has been shown to prolong lifespan and improve stress resistance in both mice and worms, prevents this decline of Dicer, and in the case of the mice, restore miRNAs to levels observed in young mice. Conversely, exposure of adipocytes to major stressors associated with aging and metabolic diseases, including toxic agents, Dicer levels decreased. Mice and worms engineered to have decreased Dicer expression in fat showed increased sensitivity to stress, a sign of premature aging. By contrast, worms engineered to "overexpress" Dicer in the intestine (the adipose tissue equivalent in worms) had greater stress resistance and lived longer.

Overall, these studies showed that regulation of miRNA processing in adipose-related tissues plays an important role in longevity and an organism's ability to respond to age-related and environmental stress. "This study points to a completely new mechanism by which fat might affect lifespan and is the first time that anyone has looked at fat and miRNAs as factors in longevity," according to co-author T. Keith Blackwell, MD, PhD, co-head of Joslin's Section on Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology and Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Based on this study, Blackwell suggests that "finding ways to improve miRNA processing to keep miRNA levels up during aging might have a role in protecting against the stresses of everyday life and the development of age- and stress-related disease."

Dr. Kahn and the study investigators are currently working on ways to genetically control Dicer levels in the fat tissues of mice, to create mouse models that are more or less resistant to stress. "We would love to find drugs that would mimic this genetic manipulation to produce a beneficial effect," says Dr. Kahn. "If we can better understand the biology of aging, we might also understand how age impacts diabetes," says Kahn.

Study co-authors include Marcelo A. Mori, Prashant Raghavan, Jeremie Boucher, Stacey Robida-Stubbs, Yazmin Macotela, Steven J. Russell, and T. Keith Blackwell of Joslin; and James L. Kirkland and Thomas Thomou of the Mayo Clinic.

Exclusive: Clinton presses Rwanda, DRC leaders on border crisis

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to resolve a conflict over rebels in eastern Congo whose military advances have stoked tensions in one of Africa's most volatile regions.

Clinton sat down with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Joseph Kabila in New York on Monday, delivering a firm message to both that steps must be taken to resolve the crisis, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday.

Clinton's unadvertised meeting, her first joint session with the two feuding African leaders, was aimed at underscoring U.S. concern over the M23 rebel group, which the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United States and U.N. experts have all said are receiving support from neighboring Rwanda.

"The secretary sent a signal of our concern over what is happening in the region, and the need for both of these leaders to find a way to defuse tensions," said the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"It is imperative that they take action," the official said.

Clinton's meeting comes ahead of a U.N. meeting on the crisis set for Thursday, one of a series of events taking place alongside the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York this week.

It also follows a U.S. decision in July to withdraw some $200,000 in military aid for Rwanda, Washington's first direct punitive action against the Rwandans. Several other western European nations have also cut or suspended aid.

Rwanda has denied having any link to eastern Congolese rebels, including the M23 group, who have been fighting Congolese government soldiers in North Kivu province since April, displacing some 470,000 civilians.

A senior U.N. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that faith and trust need to be established between Rwanda and Kabila. He said Kabila had described his confidence in Rwanda as "zero."

While Rwanda has denied any involvement in eastern DRC, the official said that privately: "They are a bit embarrassed, to say the least, and this could be one of the reasons behind the lull (in fighting) in the Kivu."

He said that if Rwanda withdrew support for M23 then the group "could be subdued."

    DE FACTO ADMINISTRATION

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said this month that rebel forces had established a de facto administration in eastern Congo, challenging the authority of Kabila's government and strengthening their hold over the territory.

A U.N. mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, has more than 17,000 troops, but the force is stretched thin across a nation the size of Western Europe and struggles to fulfill its current mandate of protecting civilians.

The U.S. official said Clinton did not explicitly warn Kagame that the further U.S. assistance could be at risk, but said she did emphasize that both leaders bear responsibility for reducing tensions.

"The secretary made no threats," the official said. "But it is important for Rwanda to cease any support for any groups operating against the government of the DRC, and it is important for the DRC government to take steps to protect all of its citizens."

Last month, the DRC said it had asked the U.N. Security Council to place sanctions on Rwanda's defense minister and two top military officials for backing the rebellion, although the United States and other powers are urging more time for political dialogue.

As uneasy neighbors, Congo and Rwanda have gone to war with each other in the past.

Eastern Congo's enduring conflict, which has killed, maimed and displaced several million civilians over nearly two decades, has its roots in Tutsi-Hutu ethnic and political enmities dating back to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Later invasions of Congo by Rwandan forces and Rwanda's backing of Congolese rebels fuelled two crippling wars.

A Story about Sean and Wendy: A Filmmaker's First Time - Outlish ...

Film festivals conjure the image of actors, filmmakers, and ?artsy? folk patting each other on the back about how great their work is, while photographers snap their animated conversations, and audiences rave about their favourite films. But among all the socialising stands several people who are worried about whether they?ll get a seal of approval.

Sean Hodgkinson, a cheerful, 35-year-old filmmaker, who?s just released his first film, ?A Story about Wendy?, at this September?s Trinidad and Tobago 2012 Film Festival, is one of those people. Nervous and nauseous, Hodgkinson hasn?t fully soaked in the fact that he?s accomplished step one of his long-term dream ? ?to produce fun and entertaining productions? ? alongside his friend and fellow cofounder of his company Quirky Films, Sascha Ali. Despite the nerves, he?s excited, especially since the film?s premiere on September 22 sold out in under an hour, giving him hope that all of his film?s dates will have similar success.

Sean Hodgkinson. Photo by Bertrand de Peaza.

Seven years ago, Hodgkinson wasn?t thinking this far. Although, his passion for filmmaking began as a young child, when he would borrow his father?s VHS Camcorder to shoot horror films, his career looked as if it would be more filled with thoughts of cumulus clouds and carbon footprints than cameras ? after he graduated with a degree in geography and environmental policy from Brock University (Canada) in 2001. Film and geography. He loves them both. But, as he says, ?Life has a funny way of presenting opportunities.?

His opportunity came in 2005, after he had returned to Trinidad. He was taking a video production course that was facilitated by well-known producer and television personality, Lisa Wickham, and, at the end of the course, she offered him a job at her company, E-Zone Entertainment. Suddenly, he was a production co-ordinator, and worked on music videos for Soca artistes, such as Shurwayne Winchester and Patrice Roberts, for hits like ?Open the Gate? and ?Sugar Boy?.He then moved on to the Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG), producing environmental features, and eventually left to work as a freelance co-ordinator and producer for ads by top, local brands. Along the way, he found time to pursue a Certificate in Filmmaking at the London Film Academy in 2009.Now, three years later, he?s at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, looking on, as audiences take in his story about Wendy, whose life spirals out of control after her fianc? leaves her, and finds herself caught up in drama.

During this whirlwind phase of publicity and checking ticket sales, Hodgkinson is still figuring out how he?s going to fund his next step. However, as you?re about to find out, he?s managed to do a lot, with little, and, hopefully, his passion for film will pay off.

O: What?s your journey been like, from launching Quirky Films to now?

SH: We founded Quirky earlier this year, and shot the film. We received some funding from the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company (TTFC), for which we are so grateful. Without them, ?Wendy? would not even be here, and the rest we begged and borrowed.

A lot of people worked for free or next to nothing. They sacrificed their time. Everyone juggled three or four roles, we had a core team of six people and everyone gave 1000%. When we went to Tobago to shoot, Heidi Walcott ? who plays the lead role ? was the personal assistant. There was no room for egos; we just wanted to make a film, and something that we were proud of.

We spent two months rehearsing, and the dedication the cast and crew displayed was unmatched, and I am so humbled by that.

Some of the cast and crew check out a take. Photo by Marlon Rouse.

O: How did you come up with the idea for ?A Story about Wendy??

SH: A colleague of mine from the film ?Limbo? told me about the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company?s (TTFC) Production Assistance and Script Development (PASD) programme, and asked if I could write. I said I could, and from that I pieced together some flash cards with some characters and interwove a story. Initially, it was written as a sitcom, but, in the end, the film took on a life of its own.

O: What?s your role at Quirky Films?

SH: Quirky has two directors, myself and Sascha Ali, whom I met at CNMG, and we clicked and realized we had a similar vision. I am not one for titles. Sascha is more of the technical wiz. I am more of the visionary, and I guess I handle public relations, which is ironic because I hate attention and I?m shy. But there?s no point in making a film and having no one see it. Right?

O: How hard is it being a filmmaker, raising funds for your work, and marketing it?

SH: It?s been a tough journey. Would I do the same thing all over again? Probably. This was my dream, and I was so fortunate to have an amazing group of people who believed in this dream. We tried to market the film via social media ? YouTube, Facebook, Twitter. I guess the only way I?d know if it was successful, would be the turnout at the premiere on September 22nd?and we were sold out on the first night. So that was great!

O: How did you go about putting together all of the necessary elements to get the film done?

SH: Woosah. The process is a long one. The entire process took about two years, from start to finish. Playing the story out in your head, writing it, auditioning actors, going to locations and rehearsing, and then you realize that a scene doesn?t work. You go somewhere else, then you plan, schedule and shoot, take after take ? there?s a foam board in the shot, the boom is in the shot, the shot is out of focus, or the lighting isn?t right? It is pretty intense. It takes a lot. We were all perfectionists. So we tried our best with the resources that we had.

O: What did you need from the main actors for this film to work?

SH: I wanted people who could essentially bring the characters to life. Heidi [Walcott ? who plays Wendy], I saw in an Axe commercial and made this ?screw pan? face?that in my mind made her Wendy. I worked with her on a music video in 2011 for ?Hard Fi? and after I met her, I said that was it. I was so nervous to ask Heidi to play the part, and vice versa, Heidi was too nervous to audition. But on the shoot we talked and laughed, and, for me, Heidi could bring this character to life.

Leading lady Heidi Walcott, who plays Wendy. Photo by Marlon Rouse.

O: For someone who doesn?t know, what?s the process of getting a film done?

SH: You write your script. When that is done, you work out your budget and start working on the crew and cast. So, at the TTFC, I met Anthony Fung and Kevin Lee Yuen, and, like myself, they were all too eager to make a film, and they came on board. Anthony was our Director of Photography and Kevin Lee Yuen was responsible for sound. But they suggested changes to the script to make it a little punchier and I listened.

Then we started casting, and once that was done, we did our table reads, literally all the cast sitting around my living room, reading out the script and suggesting changes or suggesting what the character would do, and we listened and came up with version nine of the script and that is what we shot. Our editor was also our first assistant director, so his job was to make sure we got everything done on time, and our makeup and wardrobe was done by Carla Hutchinson, who made sure everyone looked their best. It was a totally collaborative effort and it was an awesome one.

O: How hard is it to write a screenplay? What are some of the things you have to consider?

SH: We went through nine different drafts. You look at the budget and then realize that we can?t afford to shoot a scene ? one scene was a bathroom exploding at Maracas or a mas camp setting with 50 extras.

As we rehearsed with the actors, over a two-month period, we added in dialogue, changed scenes, etc. As the writer, I allowed the actors to make the characters their own, with my approval of course. Ayanna Cezanne, who plays the ?baddiss?, Sylvia, really brought a warmth and heart to a character that was otherwise two dimensional.

I don?t think you should consider anything; just write and let the producer sort out what is possible.

The crew in action. Photo by Marlon Rouse.

O: You said that the process took about two years. But you started Quirky this year, and shot the film this year as well. So clarify?what?s the sequence of how everything fell into place? Did you start before you got funding?

SH: I was awarded a PASD grant from the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company in 2010 for ?A Story About Wendy?. That PASD would have essentially covered the full production costs. At the end of 2011, when we received the funds, the terms and conditions changed somewhat, and we received a grant that effectively covered less than half of the production costs. But, that was better than nothing, so as a team, we decided to go ahead and shoot the film.

Without the TTFC, I would not even be here, so we are totally grateful for the support. Quirky came into being soon after. We thought that the film had loads of opportunity for product placement and thought that we would have attracted corporate sponsorship. Boy, was I wrong. Everyone said no. I have all the rejection letters in a manila folder. Actually, one company said yes, Trini Fried Chicken from Cunupia. They were very supportive, and others chipped in too.

Tomace, from West Mall, loaned us an amazing wardrobe for the character of Simone. Everlasting Vows loaned us amazing wedding dresses. Blue Waters gave us a tonne of water. Heather Jones loaned us an amazing dress for the opening scene of the film. Franco Trading allowed us to utilize their amazing office for a few days, and friends and family gave us access to their homes.

The Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism also gave us a grant. That allowed us to finish the film. Hopefully, now that the film has come out, Corporate Trinidad will join us and help us tell the story. We envision a six-part miniseries and we cannot wait to start.

O: Without getting too much into your personal finances?and assuming that the grants received from the TTFC cover actual production, but not your ?bread and butter?? give us a sense of the financial reality of making money as a young film maker.

Sean (middle) in action. Photo by Marlon Rouse.

SH: Wow, you ask some tough questions. I think you find most filmmakers? doing three and four jobs, to pay the bills, freelancing here, doing a job here?but like I said, if you believe in what you are doing, you will find a way to get it done.

I think ?A Story About Wendy? has a lot of potential. It?s a great story that has a universal appeal, and I am hoping that the positive response from the Film Festival would create a buzz that would financially allow us to continue to tell the story. We can?t be dependent on the Film Company and the Government to support the arts. We need corporate Trinidad to see the value as well. But it also depends on what the audience wants as well, if they want to see more they will want more ? the Santana series has proved that.

O: What do you do besides filmmaking to make money?

SH: I actually sell bottled chutney, Sumptuously Orgasmic, and it can be found at the monthly Upmarket [local crafts market].

O: Do you still work on ads?

SH: I still work on ads when the opportunity arises.

O: What?s the next step for ?A Story About Wendy?, after the T&T Film Festival?

SH: We?ve envisioned ?A Story About Wendy? to be a six-part mini series, with this film being the pilot. We are also working on another project with the same cast and crew. But I can?t say anything more.

We would love the opportunity to send it to foreign film festivals, so I hope that comes to fruition, and we hope that a local television station and corporate Trinidad would come on board and support us and get the series underway.

O: It?s your first film. What have you learnt from this experience?

SH: Patience and to trust and have faith in others.

O: What do you want people to think/think about after seeing the film?

SH: I want them not to boo at the end, and to want more. I hope they will be entertained. I mean that?s the goal, to provide entertainment. People can step away from their troubles for 40 minutes and be transported into another world, a world that is familiar.

O: Do you think that there are more opportunities for young filmmakers now?

SH: With a degree program at UWI, the TTFC and the TT Film Festival, there are more opportunities than before. Whether or not you can sustain yourself, as a filmmaker, remains to be seen, I am going try.

PFT: Ref says he goofed on two Niners challenges

Kansas City Chiefs v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

It was a rough start this year for the Chiefs, who entered Sunday?s game at 0-2 and facing an uphill challenge in the Superdome against the Saints.

After the Chiefs made that uphill climb even steeper by erasing an 18-point deficit and won the game in overtime via a scoring drive that included a gutsy decision to go for a first down on fourth and short, I spoke with coach Romeo Crennel.

?How are you doing?? I asked.

?I?m better,? Crennel said with a chuckle.

?We got the first pickle out of the jar,? Crennel said later in the conversation.? ?Now we?ll see if we can get another one.?

Crennel explained it was ?almost? the biggest win of his head-coaching career.? ?Green Bay [last year] was a big one,? Crennel said.? ?This one was needed.?

He then explained the attitude he spent the week communicating to his players.? The goal is to ?keep fighting,? Crennel said, ignoring bad plays and preventing things from going bad to worse.

That mindset worked on Sunday, when the Chiefs somehow turned it around in the third quarter, sparked by a 91-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles.

But wasn?t Charles? surgically-repaired knee still bothering him?? ?I tried to tell everybody he wasn?t hurt,? Crennel said, explaining that Charles didn?t return to the Week Two game against the Bills after banging the knee because the other running backs were running well.

Charles ran extremely well Sunday, with 233 yards on 33 carries.? Still, Crennel said the goal is to ?still try to spread it around, because we have other good people who can run the ball.?

The win should bring a temporary end to some of the heavy criticism in Kansas City regarding the team?s performance during two consecutive losses to open the season.? ?I try not to listen, but I know how the game is,? Crennel said.? ?There was a lot of [criticism].? This reinforces we are headed in the right direction.?

And if they continue in that direction, there will be plenty of pickles.

How to use Passbook on your iPhone

    1 day

One of the?most useful ? but likely misunderstood ? new features introduced in Apple's iOS 6 software for the iPhone is called Passbook. At first glance, the app might even seem like it doesn't serve a purpose. While it might not exactly be well-explained, it can simplify the process of keeping track of various passes ? such as tickets, coupons, and gift cards ? once you know how it works.

    Step 1: Downloading supported apps

In order to do things with Passbook, you need to have apps that work with it installed on your phone. Getting them is easy enough: When you load up the Passbook app for the first time, you'll see a screen describing what it can do, along with a button that, when touched, whisks you away to a special Passbook section of the App Store.

Once there, you'll see a current list of all the Passbook-compatible apps available for download. They include those from United Airlines, American Airlines, Fandango, Target, Walgreens, and more. For the purpose of this article, we've downloaded the latter two.

Step 2: Finding things to add to Passbook

In the case of Walgreens' app (download for iPhone) you can add the chain's rewards card, called Balance Rewards, to your Passbook. This involves scanning your physical card's barcode or entering your info, after which you're able to store a virtual version of the card in Passbook. You also have the option of selecting your nearest store, so that when you're near it your phone will automatically display your card.

Target's app (download for iPhone) gives you to special mobile coupons redeemable at your local store. The latest version of the app lets you add these coupons to Passbook so they can be quickly accessed without having to load the actual Target app.

For other apps, such as Fandango and Major League Baseball (MLB), you can add movie and event tickets to Passbook in a similar fashion, then have them scanned at the theater or sporting venue. Airline passes for United, American Airlines, and Lufthansa will be automatically displayed when you arrive at the airport, and Passbook can even alert you to your gate number and any changes to your flight that might occur.

Step 3: Using Passbook in everyday life

As we mentioned earlier, with location-aware Passbook passes you can have your iPhone alert you when you're near somewhere they can be used. For example, with the Walgreens Balance Rewards card, a notification will appear on the iPhone's lock screen anytime you're near the Walgreens you've designated as your home store. Sliding the notification causes the virtual card to slide onto the screen so that it can be scanned. Pressing the menu button makes it slide back off so you can unlock your phone.

Passes such as the Target mobile coupons aren't location-aware, so you actually need to run the Passbook app and tap on them so they can be scanned. Tickets, boarding passes, and gift cards can be set to automatically alert you when you're near where they can be used. It really just depends on the way the apps that create the passes are designed.

When you're done using a pass, you get to use one of our favorite features ? well, at least the most fun ? of Passbook, the shredder. Tapping the small information icon on a pass will flip it over to reveal settings, such as the ability to turn its location-awareness on and off, or determine whether or not it'll display on your lock screen. If you tap the trash can icon, you'll be asked if you want to delete the pass. Tap yes and an animated shredder will slide up the screen, cutting the pass into strips, removing it from Passbook.

Handy, and sure to get better

Passbook has only been available for a matter of days, but we're already finding it pretty handy. Its usefulness will only improve as more retailers and businesses design their apps to make use of it. Before long, we'll all hopefully have a lot more room in our wallets because of fewer cards and papers we'll need to worry about losing thanks to this handy app.

Home And Garden Made Easy ? Suggestions And Tricks! | In The ...

It is not uncommon for people to have home improvement dreams. However as we are all aware, the one thing that comes up the most is cost and expertise. In any case, quite a few dilemmas can be taken care of with just a small amount of studying and inventiveness. Think about what is possible on a smaller scale; you do not have to remodel an entire room.

Just checking out your home, with the thought of improving upon safety can bring about many ideas. Furthermore, there are a number of ways in which your home can be improved with smaller projects. You can increase your options greatly, if you are up to learning new things.

Most two story homes will have a standard type of railing on the stairways. The ones with the quaint metal railings are not really very attractive. This scheme will entail changing out those boring railings with some with pizzazz. All you need to dodo is research online for wooden stair rails, and you will see why we suggest this project. The different types of wood these railings are made of are endless. Plus, the designs will be far more appealing than the default designs in your home. After viewing what is available, the old style railings will not look suitable any longer. Installing these covers is only the first step of your home improvement renovations; in fact, there are several projects you can start right away. Trimming out your throughways that lead to different rooms, and also the open doorways, is another project. This kind of home improvement idea really is a nice one, and once again this will not set you back much at all. Adding a wood trim to these areas is a great way to improve the way that it looks. Once you install this kind of trim, then you can even change the trimming at the base of your walls. All you need to do is securely nail into the walls and you will be done this very economical and easy to do project.

When you come home to a dark house, it is sometimes beneficial to have the ability to see what is happening around you once you arrive. People that go out at night tend to leave their lights off. If your house is dark regularly, it might be a noticeable pattern that you want to break. One way around this, and to solve your problem with lighting, is to add timers that turn on at predetermined intervals. All you need to do is plug these devices into a wall socket. They are also very economical to purchase. As you can quickly see, your lights will be on and that can serve as a deterrent. You can protect your home in many ways utilizing easy security upgrades at any time. By going on the Internet, you will be able to find the security system that you need.

Truth be told, we are partial to the home improvement idea of installing an eating bar, as this will make the area more open and seem more spacious. You may have deemed this sort of task as enormous and challenging, yet after reading this article, you should see that there is not much to it. This is always the way it appears, things throughout the home are inclined to sound complex. Making things easier for you begins with learning and gaining some confidence.

Biz Stone and Ev Williams On Why Founders Should Err On The Side Of Saying Too Much

Screen shot 2012-09-23 at 5.05.26 PMEvan Williams and Biz Stone are probably still best known for their roles in co-founding Twitter, but what many people in the general public don't realize is that Twitter was actually born as just a small project within a technology startup called The Obvious Corporation. In recent months, Williams and Stone (along with Jason Goldman) have shifted a good deal of their focus back to Obvious, making it into a very unique kind of company -- part incubator, part investment vehicle, part idea lab -- with the simple goal of "creating products that matter."

Crude Oil: On the bubbling week that has past

    Commodity Online
This week was a bumpy one for oil markets as Brent traded between a range of USD107/bbl and USD117/bbl in rapid fashion. Markets were buffeted by speculation that the US would release SPR crude then by comments signaling that Saudi Arabia had increased oil production to 10 million bbl/day?eyeing USD100/bbl as the ideal price. While the White House refuted speculation that it had ordered an SPR release, it reiterated that ?all options (were) on the table to deal with disruptions, if necessary.?

A Saudi production hike to 10 mln bbl/day this month would note a modest increase from the 9.9 mln bbl/day the kingdom pumped on average in August, according to IEA data. Saudi crude availability should improve from this month with the end of peak summer demand for direct-burn crude for power generation.

The kingdom unexpectedly burned record volumes of crude in June and July for power use as natural gas supplies disappointed. Nearly 60% of Saudi power generation is sourced from crude oil, according to the IEA.

That?s far greater than the Middle East as a whole, which sources about 35% of its power from crude burn, and certainly high compared to the global average of just 7%.

While higher Saudi production is welcomed by politicians in consuming countries hoping for lower prices, it?s worth noting that Saudi spare capacity remains constrained, which is a worrying point for the bulls in the market.

Saudi spare capacity has held below 2 mln bbl/day since February. Although not the dire levels seen in the middle of the last decade, the cushion to cope with supply shortfalls looks uncomfortably thin, especially in light of heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East and Africa.

North Sea supply issues have returned to haunt the market with the deferrals of four October cargoes of Forties crude, which are part of the grades that make up the Brent crude oil benchmark. Consequently, this has provided strength to the Brent complex, including spreads. This also serves as a reminder that geopolitics aren?t the only source of supply worry. (Courtesy: Deutsche Bank)
