Sony unveils its new James Bond-endorsed Xperia line

BERLIN, Aug 31 ? Sony unveiled its new generation of Xperia smartphones at Berlin?s IFA, including two models that are NFC-enabled. The brand?s Xperia T, V and J models are all expected to hit stores by the end of the year.

Sony?s Xperia T and V are both 4G- and NFC-enabled, meaning they can seemlessly and wirelessly connect to other Sony peripherals boasting the same technology (such as headphones, speakers...).

The Xperia T?s specs include a 4.6-inch screen, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 13MP camera. The Xperia V is slightly smaller (4.3 inches) but offers increased resistance to water. The only other differences between both models lie in their colour schemes.

The 4-inch Xperia J is less powerful and packs fewer features (no NFC or 4G), but can take pics with a definition of 5MP.

The new line currently runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which should soon be updated to Jelly Bean. The designs of the phone seem borrowed from the old Xperia arc and Xperia arc S, and the smartphones will give users access to all of Sony?s multimedia apps (Walkman, Album and Movies).

Sony was quick to point out that James Bond himself uses an Xperia T in the movie ?Skyfall?, which is expected to hit cinemas on October 26.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina's leader unveiled an ambitious plan Wednesday to support the country's television and film creators with a new industrial park along the Buenos Aires waterfront that she hopes will be modeled on Hollywood's studios.

President Cristina Fernandez decreed the creation of a public-private company leveraging state pension funds to attract private developers and turn an abandoned industrial area near the city's glitzy Puerto Madero district into a business incubator known as the "Polo Audiovisual," or audiovisual center.

"Just like they do it in Hollywood, where support for the industry has made it possible for its content to become almost universal, we want our values and culture in Argentina to have this kind of development," she said.

Argentina's "El Secreto de Sus Ojos" won the best foreign film Oscar in 2010, but the vast majority of movies Argentines see are still made in America.

Fernandez has sought to change that by requiring at least a minimum amount of televised content to be homegrown, and by subsidizing a content boom on state-run television that has fostered thousands of jobs.

A new media law requires cable companies to include a movie channel run by the National Institute of Cinematic and Audiovisual Art, as well as Paka Paka, an advertising-free channel similar to the Children's Television Workshop, which brought Sesame Street to U.S. viewers.

For Argentines who grew up watching dubbed and subtitled American shows, the chance to see people on TV who talk like themselves in familiar settings has been revelatory. But cable providers and movie multiplexes still focus on top-rated shows and films backed by major U.S. distributors, making it difficult for Argentine content to find audiences.

The audiovisual incubator is to be located in a gritty zone of abandoned factories where Puerto Madero meets the Riachuelo river. Empty grain silos, chemical plants and shipbuilding equipment stand there as testaments to industries that went bust long ago.

"It's just a few meters from Puerto Madero and it's now just dead space that lacks any activity," said Fernandez. She invited real estate developers to make proposals not only for movie studios but also for other businesses and riverfront areas that would be open to the public.

Fernandez' main political rival, Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri has similarly ambitious plans for a neighboring waterfront property once known as "Sports City," where his government plans a $1 billion development of shopping centers, restaurants, office space and upscale housing for 15,000 people.

In between the two planned developments, thousands of people live in grim poverty on the riverbanks, in shacks that get swamped whenever the river water kicks up.

N. Korea making Paralympics debut

North Korea is making its debut at the Paralympic Games, a potential sign of change in a country where, according to activists, disabled people have faced enforced isolation and sterilisation.

Sixteen-year-old swimmer Rim Ju-Song, a left arm and left leg amputee, is the reclusive, nuclear-armed nation's first and only athlete in the London Games, which open on Wednesday. He will compete in the 50m freestyle S6 event.

Nine officials from the North Korean delegation were at the Olympic Park in east London on Monday and said they were looking forward to being involved, although they were unsure about how the teenager would fare.

"He has been training very hard but I don't know what will happen," Kim Sung-Chol, the team doctor, told AFP, adding that Rim, who was given a wildcard entry, had not competed internationally to get to the qualifying standard.

"But the main thing is that we are participating to experience the Games, then next time, if we can improve further, then maybe at the next Paralympics (in Rio de Janeiro in 2016) we can be involved more," he said in English.

North Korea won four gold medals and two bronze at this summer's London Olympics, finishing 20th in the overall medal table to register the country's best performance since Barcelona in 1992.

The athletes returned home to a heroes' welcome on August 17, with cheering crowds lining the streets of the capital Pyongyang before Premier Choe Yong-Rim and other top officials hosted a banquet reception, according to state media.

Vice Premier Kim Yong-Jin said in a speech that the gold medallists had glorified "the great era of Kim Jong-Un", who took over as the country's supreme leader after his father Kim Jong-Il's death in December 2011.

The communist state has featured in international sport for many years, most notably the 1966 football World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals, losing to Eusebio's Portugal 5-3.

But people with physical or intellectual impairments have faced a long history of discrimination. Acute malnutrition, which stunts development in children, has exacerbated rates of disability, according to the United Nations.

South Korean activists and human rights reports from the US State Department have alleged in the past that disabled people were quarantined within camps far outside Pyongyang and forcibly sterilised.

Charities working in the country, however, have said that attitudes are slowly changing and the government now offers welfare programmes for disabled people while there is a para-sports centre in Pyongyang.

North Korea's neighbour and arch-rival, South Korea, first participated at the Paralympics in 1968 and has sent athletes to every Games since, winning 279 medals in total, including 110 gold.

Kim Sung-Chol said that North Korea has a number of athletes with a disability, particularly in table tennis and powerlifting, yet all failed to qualify for London.

He also said that his compatriots were supportive of para-sport, which could bode well for the future.

"Of course we have not organised this (the Paralympics) but people do enjoy it. Koreans really like their sport," he added.

"At the Paralympics, we are first timers. Maybe in the future we can select some excellent athletes and win medals."

I just finished Week 4 and I?m over the fun of getting starting. I?m still laughing and having a good time with Rob and Devon doing exercise and nutrition, but my weight has been stagnant at 177 pounds for two weeks and my horrible rotten stomach fat doesn?t seem to be disappearing. In addition, after every workout day (3 times a week) with Rob I am completely drained of energy. I am now able to give my workout almost everything I?ve got because my cardio is much better, but that means that I?m ready to fall asleep at 9AM after doing a hard workout.

When I started this challenge, I was told by Rob and Devon as well as friends that there would come a time when it felt like I was working really hard, but change wasn?t happening fast enough for me. One month is done. I do feel differently. I do look differently. I do think differently about how I eat and choose my food. Instead of rejoicing in my personal growth, I?m dwelling on the fact that my stomach still looks like hell.

The one ray of hope was that a suit I wore two months ago fit perfectly when I attended a wedding this past Saturday night. I no longer had to wear the pants with the top button open and my belt holding the whole show up. Moreover, my friends planned the food to be super healthy so I was able to eat almost all of the hot buffet that was served for the main course. It was also really interesting as this was my first wedding where I didn?t drink ANYTHING; no champagne, no beer, no mixed drinks. Nothing. By the end of the night it was like watching little kids run around who had too much sugar at a sleep over party (6 people ended up in the pool? fully clothed).
At this point, I feel that I have the right tools to keep moving forward in a positive direction, so I am just going to keep on going and let the process work its magic. I?ve done a lot of difficult things before, but this is probably one of the hardest. It?s 90 days and the assignment is my body. ?Relax,? has been the best advise that I?ve gotten so far.

Arctic sea ice hits record low, and keeps going

Summer storm and thin ice probably contributed to massive melt

With weeks still left in the summer melt season, the Arctic Ocean?s floating skin of ice has already shrunk to a record minimum.

As of August 26, Arctic sea ice covered 4.10 million square kilometers ? 70,000 square kilometers below the previous satellite-era record from 2007, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.

?The ice cover is now just so thin and weak in the springtime that large parts of it can?t survive the melt season,? says NSIDC director Mark Serreze.

Arctic sea ice grows in winter and melts partly away each summer. Overall, more sea ice has been lost each year as temperatures rise. From 1979 to 2011, the amount of sea ice left in September at the end of each melt season dropped by an average of 12 percent per decade.

The ice isn?t just shrinking; it?s also thinning. The Arctic used to contain lots of thick ice ? some ?3 to 4 meters thick ? that survived year after year. Now it?s dominated by thinner ice only 1 to 2 meters thick and just one to two summers old. ?It?s almost like parts of the Arctic have become a giant slushee at this time of year,? says Walt Meier, a sea ice expert at NSIDC.

In 2007, the previous record year, winds, cloud cover and other weather conditions were just right for a lot of ice to melt away. ?There were a number of people saying [2007] was a one-off and you?ll never see this perfect storm again,? says Serreze. ?What Mother Nature is telling us is that you don?t need a perfect storm anymore, just because the ice is so thin now.?

This year, ice cover stayed pretty much on track with 2007 levels through July, after which it rapidly nose-dived. One possible factor was a strong Arctic storm that spun up north of Alaska in early August,. around the same time a lot of ice melted out from the East Siberian Sea.

Serreze and others say it?s too early to know how the storm might have been related to the sea ice loss ? whether the storm broke ice apart and made it more susceptible to melting, or whether the two events just happened to coincide. ?My gut feeling is that it was probably not critical and we would have reached a new record regardless,? says James Screen, a climate scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia who has studied the role of Arctic storms in sea ice loss.

Nevertheless, says Meier, storms that thicker sea ice might once have weathered now rank a knockout punch for thin, rotten ice. ?The Arctic is becoming like a fighter with a glass jaw,? he says.

The six lowest sea-ice extents in the satellite record have now occurred in the last six years, according to the NSIDC. More melt means more open water exposed to sunlight; that water absorbs more heat and causes feedback loops that heat the Arctic even more.

For now, though, cooler temperatures are returning, and the sea ice should stop melting and begin refreezing by around mid-September. How much more ice gets lost between now and then ?all depends on atmospheric conditions,? says Claire Parkinson, a sea ice expert at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

But this year?s small lingering ice pack probably means less ice next spring. ?It sets us up for another world of hurt next year,? says Serreze.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Miley Cyrus is coming to "Two and a Half Men."

The former "Hannah Montana" star will guest in a two-episode arc of the CBS comedy when it returns for its 10th season this fall, the network said Monday.

Based on the provisional data of Statistics Lithuania, in July 2012, the turnover (VAT excluded) of enterprises engaged in retail trade, except for the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, amounted to LTL 2294.1 million and, compared to June, grew by 4 per cent at constant prices (seasonally adjusted, by 1.3 per cent).

Over the month, the turnover of enterprises trading in food products grew by 4.5 per cent, of those trading in non-food products ? by 4.7 per cent. The turnover of enterprises engaging in retail trade in automotive fuel grew by 1.8 per cent at constant prices. The largest increase was observed for specialised stores trading in clothing (by 20.4 per cent) and audio and video equipment (20 per cent).

Over the year (July 2012, compared to July 2011), the turnover (VAT excluded) of enterprises engaged in retail trade, except for the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, grew by 5 per cent at constant prices (working day adjusted ? by 5.7 per cent). Over the year, the turnover of enterprises trading in food products increased by 1.7 per cent, of those trading in non-food products ? by 11.4 per cent, while the turnover of enterprises engaging in retail trade in automotive fuel decreased by 0.6 per cent at constant prices. Robin Roberts to start medical leave next week

NEW YORK (AP) ? Robin Roberts says Friday will be her last day co-anchoring "Good Morning America" for a while.

On Monday's edition of the ABC News wakeup program, Roberts made official the start date for what's being called her "extended medical leave."

Roberts told viewers in July that she has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia.

She says she will be hospitalized next week to prepare for the bone marrow transplant that will take place about 10 days after that.

But looking further ahead, Roberts noted she is luckier than many workers who become ill. She says her bosses have been generous in giving her the needed time off, and her job is waiting for her when she's well enough to return. She described herself as "very blessed."

But Irsay benefited greatly from the fact that he team was bad enough in 1997 to get in position to draft Peyton Manning in 1998.

And if Andrew Luck turns out to be the next great franchise quarterback, Irsay will have benefited greatly from the fact that Peyton?s neck gave out and the team went 2-14 in the same year that Luck was entering the NFL.

Husband Walter and I are celebrating 45 years of marriage today. We have always been a bit casual about anniversaries. That fact has never bothered me. I have been blessed with a mate who regularly works on preserving and strengthening the glue of our relationship.That doesn?t mean we haven?t ever been beset by insidious solvents that are capable of dissolving the glue. But regular ?glue maintenance? and dependence on a faithful and sovereign God has given us the joy of both spontaneous and planned celebrations of life throughout the year. So today I celebrate life with one of those rare men, a guy who ?sticks? through good times and bad, who has never stopped growing in all aspects of life, who accepts me with all my irritating faults, who encourages me and engages me in adventures I would never have enjoyed on my own. Hundreds gather for Sikh temple shooting memorial

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) ? Hundreds of people streamed into a Wisconsin high school Friday to pay their final respects to six worshippers gunned down by a white supremacist at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee.

Somber, tearful mourners, most wearing scarves on their heads in the Sikh tradition, greeted victims' family members with hugs at the Oak Creek High School gymnasium. Six open caskets were arranged inside the gymnasium and a large video screen flashed photos of those killed and injured.

After they filed past the caskets, mourners took their seats as Sikh singers sang hymns in Punjabi, an Indian dialect. One of the singers paused to translate some lyrics into English.

"Dear God, you have given me this body and this soul. This body is doing whatever you want me to do. You take this soul, this is your soul," he said.

Several dozen police officers stood by in the gym, watching the service.

The wake and visitation, initially scheduled to last for two hours, was extended by another two to accommodate mourners who traveled from abroad and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder as a last-minute speaker. Other dignitaries expected to attend include Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan.

After the service, mourners planned to return to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin where the six died and three others were critically wounded Sunday morning. There, priests will read the Sikh holy book from cover to cover in a traditional rite honoring the dead called "Akhand Path." That process takes 48 hours.

"We want to pay homage to the spirits who are still in there," said Harpreet Singh, a nephew of one of the victims.

Earlier Friday, about two dozen worshippers milled around the temple, where blood-stained carpet had been replaced and some walls had been freshly painted by members allowed inside the day before.

One bullet hole in a door jamb leading to the main prayer hall was left unrepaired as a memorial to the shooting victims.

Kuldeep Chahal, 35, a Sikh teacher from Toronto, arrived at the temple Friday with several other people after driving for 12 hours. Chahal brought banners and cards that temple members in Canada had signed for families of the victims.

"The reason we came down is because we definitely what to show the community how much we support them," Chahal said.

Federal investigators may never know why 40-year-old Wade Michael Page chose to attack total strangers in a holy place. What they do know is that the Army veteran opened fire with a 9 mm pistol at the temple, shortly before Sunday services were due to begin.

Page killed five men and one woman, and injured two other men. Authorities say he then ambushed the first police officer who responded, shooting him nine times and leaving him in critical condition. A second officer then shot Page in the stomach, and Page took his own life with a shot to the head.

The officer who was injured, Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy, was upgraded Thursday to satisfactory condition.

The dead included Satwant Singh Kaleka, 65, the temple president who was shot as he tried to fend off Page with a butter knife.

The other victims included:

? Ranjit Singh, 49, and his 41-year-old brother, Sita Singh, two priests whose families were back in India and whose lives in America revolved around their faith;

? Suveg Singh Khattra, 84, a former farmer in India who was a constant presence at the temple;

? Prakash Singh, 39, a priest who was remembered as a fun-loving personality who enjoyed telling jokes; and

? Paramjit Kaur, 41 who worked 66 hours a week to provide for her family, but also found time to pray every day for at least an hour.

The FBI roped off the temple for four days while agents conducted their investigation. They handed the keys back to Sikh leaders Thursday morning.

Katia Bertoldi is talking fast. She has only 12 minutes to present her work in the burgeoning field of 'extreme mechanics'. But first, the Harvard University engineer smiles at the physicists gathered in Boston at the March 2012 meeting of the American Physical Society. She has to show them what she found in a toy shop.

Projected onto the screen, the Hoberman Twist-O looks like a hollow football made of garishly colored plastic links. Twist it just so, however, and hinges between the links allow it to collapse into a ball a fraction of its original size. Twist it the other way, and it springs back open. Bertoldi explains that the Twist-O inspired her group to create a spherical device that collapses and re-expands, not with hinges but through mechanical instabilities: carefully designed weak spots that behave in a predictable way. Applications might include lightweight, self-assembling portable shelters or nanometer-scale drug-delivery capsules that would expand and release their cargo only after they had passed through the bloodstream and reached their target.

The challenge, Bertoldi says, is to figure out the exact instabilities a structure needs to achieve its desired behavior. She quickly describes the necessary geometry and runs down a list of constraints. There are just 25 shapes that satisfy all the requirements, she explains, glossing over the months of computation it took to solve the problem. Then she starts a video to show the assembled throng the design that her team has come up with.

Student engineers have always been taught that mechanical instabilities are a problem to avoid. Such instabilities can quickly lead to structural failures ? the collapse of a weight-bearing pillar, the crumpling of a flat steel plate or the buckling of a metal shell. From failures come disasters, such as the Second World War Liberty Ships that broke up while at sea. And the devilishly complex mathematical analysis of buckling structures ground to a halt in the late nineteenth century, because it was unworkable with the methods then available.

During the past half-decade or so, however, a new generation of physicists and engineers has begun to embrace instability. These researchers have been inspired, in part, by advances in geometry and nonlinear mathematics that have allowed them to progress where their forebears could not. They have already, for example, devised a theory for why cabbage leaves and torn plastic rubbish bags ripple; calculated the patterns of wrinkles in fabric and crumples in paper; and accounted for the way coils and loops develop in the guts of vertebrate embryos.

On the practical side, one source of inspiration has been the widespread availability of flexible polymers and silicone materials, as epitomized by the vast selection of soft yet tough covers for smart phones. Such materials make it possible to imagine electronics, robots, tools and vehicles whose structures can radically deform yet still recover their original shapes.

The resulting extreme-mechanics movement has grown rapidly. The first three conference sessions to bear the name, totaling fewer than 40 presentations, were held during the March 2010 meeting of the American Physical Society (APS). Just two years later, Bertoldi's talk on collapsible spheres was one of 111 presentations on extreme mechanics spread across 8 sessions. Hundreds of researchers are now active in the field worldwide. In spring 2011, the US National Science Foundation announced an opportunity for substantial funding in the field: it would allot up to US$2 million over four years to projects in Origami Design for Integration of Self-assembling Systems for Engineering Innovation (ODISSEI). The foundation expects to announce the awards this month.
